Principal’s Message
Dear Farmhouse Montessori Families,
Welcome to another term! Term 3 is a busy term with school photos (next week), Book Week, Fathers’ Day breakfast/afternoon teas, parent information sessions, and parent-teacher conferences.
New Campus
Our primary school campus (K-6) has found a new home at North Head Sanctuary, Manly. We have been thrilled to start the school term in a new, light-filled building, and students, staff, and families will be delighted with the new campus. Our classrooms are now well connected, and a verandah connects the two classrooms (lower primary and upper primary) with beautiful bushland views. Some of the highlights of the new campus include a library, music room, and multimedia room.
The planning and process for moving our primary school campus have been quite the undertaking, and I would like to acknowledge the support of the School Board and all of our parent volunteers, who have spent hours helping pack and unpack boxes for the move and helping to set up. Former Principal Bruce Rixon was instrumental in initiating the process of moving to our new campus.
You can sign up online to take a tour of the new primary campus.

MY 20 YEAR JOURNEY WITH FARMHOUSE
My journey started a vicennial ago at the Farmhouse Montessori School on the 19th July 2004. I remember that day so well. I started at the old Manly Vale church site in King Street during the transition to the now current location at Nth Balgowlah during the school holidays. We opened the Nth Balgowlah site at the beginning of Term 3 2004. We had one pre-primary class which was run by the Principal Carmen Parker with Sara Brady running the toddler class of two-year-olds and also running a parent child class for under twos. I was on the front desk and Jill Robertson was in the office. We were a small but happy team to start with but over the years have grown to what we see today.
Many funny tales along the way too many to retell except one maybe-my fear of spiders and my visitor in the reception area one cold winters morning when a large Huntsmen came to visit me on the wall above the Toddler window. My first reaction and unintentional was to yell. Carmen came running out of the classroom to see if I was alright. I could just point to the Huntsman. Once she finished admonishing me for yelling, she calmly removed the spider to a safe location outside. It was the last time I have ever yelled/screamed at the sight of a spider (I still don’t like them) however as Carmen pointed out we have to remember the children in our care and to act calmly at all times.
I am indebted to the dynamic leadership of one key Principal and many teaching staff and operational and support staff over the years I have worked at the school. Carmen Parker the first Nth Balgowlah Principal who tough me a lot about the Education System and different Government Department Reporting bodies… and important skills of catching a spiders. I have also worked alongside many wonderful, innovative and exciting– exemplary leaders and educators Sara Brady, Phillipa Alford, Fiona Campbell, Monique Burton, Matty Van Dempt & Jenny Bensted (all fabulous Montessori Teachers) just to name a few as well of course not to be forgot Jill Robertson who has been at the school for approximately 23 years firstly as a parent and then in the office handling the school accounts.
I have above all made some wonderful lifelong friends and colleagues along the way
They were, and some remain, exemplary leaders: those who had and have student engagement and achievement at the very core of every decision that they made and continue to make. They unite; they do not divide. They guide, they do not impose. They listen, they do not dismiss. They promote the innovation of others; they do not take the credit for themselves. They care about themselves last, and others first.
In Maria Montessori words: The greatest sign of success for a teacher is to be able to say, ‘The children are now working as if I did not exist,”
Finally, schools exist for children. I have never ceased to be amazed by the capacity of young people to learn and to achieve and to develop a love of lifelong learning.
The students at Farmhouse Montessori are outstanding, are polite, energetic and kind. They are loyal, sincere and generous.
Students are not simply the wonderful human products of their school, they are wonderful human products of their home. Parents, you too, are to be congratulated for the values and work ethic that you have instilled in your child.
I have enjoyed the last twenty year, roll on the next few years at this stage, maybe not another vicennial (Ha Ha Ha). I look forward to working with the new school principal Alia James and continuing this exciting story.

ELOUERA | Stage 1 Infant Community
In Montessori classrooms, setting the table is more than a daily routine—it’s a vital learning experience. This simple task helps children develop independence, fine motor skills, and a sense of responsibility. By using child-sized utensils and visual aids, children learn to manage their own space and understand the importance of order and preparation.
The activity also fosters social skills as children work together and gain an appreciation for dining etiquette and cultural practices. Ultimately, setting the table in a Montessori setting empowers children with practical life skills that extend beyond the classroom, laying a foundation for confidence and self-reliance.

BURBANGANA | Stage 1
Language Cards for the Olympics
This activity is designed for early language development. It supports the child in developing their ability to classify and match. The exercise gives the child the opportunity to learn the names of objects or in this case sports. Here the children are using the cards to gain an understanding of the Olympics.
Katherine has found some new resources for the children to learn the names of the different sports that the athletes perform in Paris.
The language cards are a great first exercises within the language area that the children will work with it enriches their language and is a great conversation base activity. As time goes on different games are introduced so the material is not static.
— Teresa, Katherine and Yuko.
COOINDA | Stage 1
Dear Cooinda Families,
We have had some exciting and busy times in the Cooinda as we settle into the term. Dentist Rachel visited us, teaching the children about dental hygiene and proper brushing and flossing techniques.
In celebration of the Olympics, the children learned about its history and significance and made their medals, which they proudly wore.
Our geographical focus this week is on Oceania. The children have been locating various countries on the map and learning about the continent’s unique cultures, wildlife, and landscapes.
—Catalina, Harshitha, Jo, Claire & Rachel.
AIKYA | Stage 2
Welcome back to Term 3! It’s wonderful to see our students return with bright smiles and a renewed eagerness for learning. We are excited to share some updates from our first two weeks in the new school term.
A New Home in Building 5
Our transition to the new campus in Building Five has been seamless and fulfilling. The space is proving to be well worth the wait, offering a fresh and inspiring environment for both students and educators. The children have adapted remarkably well to their new routines and surroundings. The open and thoughtfully designed spaces have allowed for greater freedom of movement and exploration, aligning perfectly with the Montessori philosophy of fostering independence and self-directed learning.
Exploring Newton’s Laws in Science
Our young scientists have been delving into the fascinating world of physics, focusing on Newton’s Laws of Motion. Through hands-on experiments, they’ve explored concepts like inertia, force, and action-reaction pairs. It’s been a joy to watch their curiosity spark as they test hypotheses and observe the principles in action. These practical experiences not only enhance their understanding of scientific concepts but also nurture critical thinking and problem-solving skills, making learning a truly exciting journey for them.
A Journey Through Ancient Greece
In history, we’ve embarked on an exploration of Ancient Greece. The children have been captivated by stories of mythology, the birth of the Olympics, and the rich cultural heritage of this ancient civilisation. They’ve enjoyed creating their own Greek pottery designs and learning about the significance of various gods and goddesses. This study not only enriches their historical knowledge but also connects them to the broader human experience, highlighting the contributions of past societies to our present-day world and providing them with valuable insights into the human journey.
Warm regards,
The Aikya Children and Teachers.
YANI | Stage 3
The children in the Yani classroom have been buzzing with excitement over the past two weeks as they settle into our new building. One of the highlights has been the ability to share moments with the younger children in the Aikya classroom. Our spacious balcony has become a favorite spot for both work and snack time, offering a delightful change of scenery. The children have adapted well to their new environment and have shown incredible engagement in their lessons and follow-up activities.
In the classroom, our older children have been diving into fascinating subjects such as constellations and light-years. Their enthusiasm is reflected in the beautiful work they’ve produced, showcasing their understanding and creativity. We were also thrilled to welcome back Sam, a former student and Arjo’s brother, who visited the classroom and shared a 3D-printed dragon he made at home. This demonstration was not only inspiring but also sparked curiosity and excitement among the children about the possibilities of 3D printing.
This term, the children have also begun learning about frisbee as a new sport. The frisbee lessons have been a hit, with everyone enjoying the cooperative games and the opportunity to build a sense of community. The teamwork during these activities have been wonderful to witness, and the children are eagerly looking forward to each session. Overall, the past two weeks have been filled with joy and learning in our new Yani classroom.
