Principal’s Message
Dear Farmhouse Montessori Families,
Trivia & Social Night
It was a thrill to see many of our parents and staff dressed up as they wanted to be when they grew up for this year’s Annual Trivia Night at the Wakehurst Golf Club. This event, which was not only a fun social gathering but also a fundraising initiative, was made possible by the efforts of our parent volunteers (Claire Aspinall, Bobby Jo Hardy, Alicia Hill, Lydka Javorka, Jayme Lingard, Sarah Mitchell, Cherie Oktem, Tamara Press, Leslie Whelan, Erin Williams, Sharon Yates, Donna Hughes (our Enrolment and Community Engagement Officer), Suzanne Lyle, Stephen McNulty from the school Board for putting all of the trivia questions together, John Cunningham our auctioneer, our teachers for putting the classroom artworks together, Kim de Hann for helping with the Burbangana artworks and our generous sponsors.
The evening, filled with a live and silent auction, was a testament to the incredible support and generosity of our school community. We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone for their very generous bidding for the respective art works and silent auction items.
We have received some additional donations and a final online silent auction is open until 22 November 4pm via this link: Silent Auction

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Families,
At our recent Parent Information Session, we discussed what the Kindergarten year looks like at our school. Here is a brief introduction of the program offered at both our Preschool campus in North Balgowlah and the Primary campus at North Head, Manly.
The Kindergarten year at Farmhouse Montessori School marks the commencement of children’s Primary school education aligned with the NESA (NSW Education Standards Authority) curriculum. It is a time for children to consolidate all the skills and knowledge they’ve gained over the previous years, bringing together their early learning experiences. Our Kindergarten program integrates the Montessori program with the six Key Learning Areas (KLAs) defined by the NSW Department of Education Syllabus.
In a Montessori classroom, children are introduced to concepts and skills that evolve with their development. The cyclic approach to the curriculum begins in a concrete form suited to our youngest learners and as children mature the same concepts and skills are revisited in progressive ways reinforcing the earlier experiences. This approach allows both continuity and flexibility for each child to build on their understanding over time. This flexibility also allows the Kindergarten children to be part of a mixed-age classroom as either their last year in Cycle 1 (class for 3 to 6-year-old children) or their first year in Cycle 2 (class for 6 to 9-year-old children) based on their development and abilities.
If you’d like more information about our program, day-to-day operations, or specific details, please feel free to reach out. Enrolments are now open for our 2025 Kindergarten program at the North Head Campus, and we’d be happy to provide any additional insights you need.
Kind regards,
Harshitha Ravikumar | Deputy Principal
ELOUERA | Stage 1 Infant Community
This week, our toddler class had an exciting outdoor adventure—a colour scavenger hunt! Using coloured paper as a base, they eagerly searched for vibrant red objects, yellow flowers, brown sticks, green grass, and other colorful treasures. This hands-on activity not only encouraged them to explore and connect with nature but also helped reinforce color recognition skills in a fun, meaningful way. The children loved sharing their finds and proudly showed off their colorful discoveries. Moments like these highlight how simple & joyful learning can be!

BURBANGANA | Stage 1
Over the last 2 weeks in Burbangana, the children created their own maps featuring local landmarks such as parks, libraries, and hospitals. This hands-on activity culminated with the children mapping out the farmhouse playground and engaging in an object “hunt”.
To further enrich the children’s mapping activities, we introduced road signs and initiated discussions on road safety, helping them understand traffic symbols and the importance of staying safe on the roads.
In art and cultural studies, we introduced the children to the work of Henri Matisse and Piet Mondrian. They also immersed themselves in learning about Indigenous symbols. They expressed their knowledge through tactile and hands-on experiences such as sand tray markings, constructing with natural materials, tracing, and crafting artworks on whiteboards.
Finally, we celebrated ‘Grandparents and Special Friends’ day and learned more about the traditions surrounding Diwali. Harshitha demonstrated how she dresses in her special sari and also provided beautiful terracotta tea light holders for the children to paint.
Kindly yours,
– Vanessa, Teresa and Katherine.
COOINDA | Stage 1
This year, the Cooinda children have been exploring primary and secondary colours, shapes, and forms through a variety of art activities thoughtfully planned to encourage their creativity and eagerness to express themselves through art and craft. To bring together all these concepts and experiences, this term we began exploring artists such as Henri Matisse and Piet Mondrian, and next week, we will introduce the work of Wassily Kandinsky.
The children have been wonderfully creative and have enjoyed experimenting with techniques such as painting, tracing lines, mixing primary colours, making collages, and gluing shapes to create unique compositions. It has been amazing to observe their talents and creativity, and we’re delighted to provide opportunities for them to learn about these artists, their stories, and their beautiful artwork.

AMAROO | OUTDOOR CLASSROOM
Composting is a fabulous way of educating children about the importance of reducing food waste. They also learn about the natural process of decomposition and the role of the worms and other creatures that help to create and maintain healthy soil.
Involving them in the process encourages a sense of responsibility and care for their environment. As they tend the compost, physically carry the beautiful soil to their vegetable patches and then plant their seedlings to hopefully reap the harvest of fresh vegetables they begin to understand the interconnectedness of the natural world. It’s also very exciting to hold a worm!

AIKYA | Stage 2
The past fortnight has been full of rich learning experiences and joyful community moments here in Aikya! The children had a fantastic excursion to Manly Beach with Manly Surf School, an experience brimming with excitement, learning, and practical life skills. We journeyed on the public bus, an excellent lesson in independence and navigating our local area. At the beach, the children were introduced to surf safety fundamentals, and the basics of surfing and learned about some of our unique local ocean wildlife. There were plenty of opportunities for fun and teamwork between the games of Capture the Flag and beach relays.
Back in the classroom, our community-building initiatives are evolving with great enthusiasm. The children have been exploring ways to support friendships and resolve differences through the Talk it Out program, helping them develop empathy, express their needs, and approach issues calmly. Inspired by these sessions, we’ve reintroduced our weekly Community Meetings. Led entirely by the children, these gatherings give each child a voice in our classroom. Every week, one child is the facilitator, with a timekeeper and a note-taker to document key discussions. They share work they’re proud of, acknowledge one another’s achievements, and discuss any class issues with a solutions-focused mindset. This weekly ritual is empowering the children to self-manage and appreciate one another’s contributions in meaningful ways.
Our classroom environment continues to buzz with activity. Children are steadily taking more responsibility for their learning through daily expectations and the use of self-study guides, which help them select appropriate hands-on materials independently. These tools, along with the guidance of enriching lessons, support each child in managing their own learning journey—a core element of Montessori education.
We’re excited to see how these experiences continue to shape our Aikya community and to support each child’s personal and social development. Thank you for your continued support.
Until next time,
Toby, Chris and the Aikya Children
YANI | Stage 3
The past few weeks have been full of exciting activities and learning experiences for the students at Yani. One of the highlights has been the start of our surfing lessons in Manly. Despite the not-ideal weather, the children have embraced the opportunity to learn about water safety, including how to identify rips and currents. During the most recent session, after successfully completing a swimming test, the students eagerly learned the fundamental steps of surfing and bodyboarding. It was lovely to see them encouraging and helping each other as they ventured into the water for the first time.
In addition to our outdoor adventures, we celebrated Grandparents and Special Friend’s Day, a beloved event that brought our community together. The children were proud to showcase their work and share their classroom experiences with their loved ones. The event was filled with joy, as families spent quality time together, enjoying a light morning tea and engaging in conversations about the students’ achievements and projects. This day was a wonderful reminder of the strong connections that enhance our learning environment.
Back in the classroom, the older students have been immersed in the study of electricity and magnetism. They have been enthusiastic about learning how circuits work and experimenting by building their own. Through hands-on activities and collaborative projects, students are developing a deeper understanding of how electricity powers everyday devices. This exploration into science has sparked curiosity and excitement, adding another layer of engagement to their academic journey.
