Principal’s Message

Dear Farmhouse Montessori Families

As we move through this exciting term, it has been a joy to witness the many highlights across both our North Head and North Balgowlah campuses, from excursions and activities to the steady rhythm of daily work in the classroom work cycles.

Parent Observations: This term, it has been lovely to welcome families into the classrooms for parent observations. Observation is a key aspect of Montessori education. For us, it is how we follow each child’s unique interests, strengths and nurture their learning. For parents, it is a special opportunity to quietly enter the classroom and see children’s independence, social connections, and growing capabilities, often in ways that may not be visible at home. The true value lies in seeing the classroom as a whole, the calm flow of work, the moments of collaboration, and the care children show for their environment.

At the preschool, we are delighted to open our doors for this important Montessori experience after a long break. If you have not yet had the chance to book an observation, I warmly encourage you to do so. It is a powerful way to connect with your child’s learning and to witness the subtle yet profound ways Montessori education impacts children.

Annual Auction Artworks: Our children are busily preparing their artworks for the upcoming auction, with each classroom working on a collaborative piece to be showcased on the night. Parent volunteers have brought wonderful creativity and fresh ideas into the process, turning the making of these artworks into an experience for the children. We are truly grateful for their time and enthusiasm.

Keep an eye out as these pieces take shape in the lead-up to our annual Trivia Night. We warmly invite all families to join us for a fun evening of community, celebration, and fundraising.

Preschool Coordinator’s Message

Peer Collaboration & Social Development at The Farmhouse Montessori

At our Montessori preschool, collaboration is woven into the very fabric of our day. In our mixed-age environment, older children naturally guide and assist younger ones, whether it’s something simple like showing them how to roll a mat or even helping with complex activities. Younger children, in turn, confidently seek guidance from older peers when encountering a task for the first time. This give and take fosters social interaction among the children, making collaboration a natural part of their daily interactions and experience.

Our carefully prepared classroom and consistent routines create a calm, orderly space where children feel secure and respected. This structure encourages conversation, sharing of ideas and problem-solving opportunities between peers. Children experience the independence of making their own choices much like an adult would experience on a day to day. This freedom builds self-confidence and a deep sense of belonging that encourages social development. In this way, our Montessori program not only nurtures individual growth but also cultivates a caring, connected community.

Kind Regards,

Merrill Tilwani  | Interim Preschool Coordinator

ELOUERA | Stage 1 Infant Community

In the Infant Community, the first few months of the year are often focused on independent work and solitary play, which is a natural stage of play for the toddler. As the year progresses and the children’s interest in their peers begins to grow, we start to scaffold and model the basic skills needed to build and maintain relationships. This includes guiding them through early turn-taking, showing how to offer and receive help, and demonstrating ways to join in play respectfully. Through these experiences, children gain the foundations for meaningful and positive connections with others.

In Elouera this term, we have seen wonderful growth in the children’s social and emotional development. Many are beginning to seek out their peers for shared experiences, whether it’s working together on a puzzle, helping one another bake bread or prepare fruit, or joining in play and games in the garden. These moments of collaboration give the children opportunities to practise turn-taking, problem-solving, and empathy, all of which are essential for building positive relationships.

Warm regards,

Elouera – Corinne, Nina, Karen, Yuko, Anniebelle.

BURBANGANA | Stage 1

Peer Collaboration and Social Development

The outdoor Montessori environment provides daily opportunities for peer collaboration and social development. Recently, a group of peers worked together in the sandpit, using trucks and spades to fill the backs of their dump trucks before taking on a shared challenge of digging a deep hole. They experimented with different tools, including a shovel and a small hoe, and quickly realised they could work more effectively by combining their efforts. Throughout the activity, they communicated openly, took turns, and encouraged each other, demonstrating both teamwork and problem-solving skills.

Their play took a lively turn when they decided to take a break from their excavation work to jump over the large mound of sand they had created. They then returned to their digging with renewed enthusiasm. This kind of shared experience builds practical skills such as communication and coordination, while also fostering empathy, patience, and respect for each other’s contributions, which are essential elements of social development in the Montessori environment.

Warm wishes,

Burbangana educators – Vanessa, Annabelle and Merrill.

COOINDA | Stage 1

Peer collaboration is a natural and essential part of learning in the Cooinda classroom. Children are able to work together, share ideas, and support one another.  This fosters both academic and social development. In a Montessori environment older children often take on the role of mentor, guiding their younger peers with patience and respect.  The younger children bring more curiosity and a fresh perspective to the group.

Working together in this way nurtures empathy, communication skills, and a sense of belonging to our community helping children grow as individuals but also together. It is always beautiful to watch a group of children enthusiastically talking about a subject, sharing their own knowledge and learning to listen to their friends.

— Jo, Dawn, Claire, Mireia, Larissa and Claudia.

AMAROO | OUTDOOR CLASSROOM

In our Montessori outdoor classroom, social development flourishes through curiosity, a love of learning, and shared exploration. Children work together to inquire, create, and problem-solve in an open environment that encourages communication and cooperation with peers. Whether they are checking out the worms in the compost, working on construction, discovering insects, or working on the floor with Montessori materials these shared experiences foster empathy, patience, and respect for one another. The Amaroo space is not just a place for physical activity, but a vibrant community where social skills grow organically through meaningful interactions as we follow the interests of the child.

—Dawn.

ORANA | Stage 2

Peer Collaboration and Social Development in Orana

The Orana classroom is a vibrant space for Kindergarten and Year 1 students following the Montessori approach, where peer collaboration and social development are key focuses. Each day begins with our morning circle, a special time when children share their thoughts and stories—from recounting their weekend adventures to discussing topics that help build emotional maturity and social skills. One of the highlights is our Friday “Show and Tell,” where children bring something special to share with their classmates, fostering confidence and a sense of community, as well as the ability to ask questions.

Peer learning is a natural part of our classroom culture. Children regularly learn from one another through group activities and have the opportunity to present their research projects to other classes, enhancing their communication skills and pride in their work. Likewise, children from our other two classrooms visit Orana to share their own projects and sometimes even teach lessons that are just right for our younger learners. This exchange broadens their perspectives and builds a supportive learning network across year levels.

Outside the classroom, children play together in the playground alongside peers of different ages, mimicking the diversity of the wider world. These interactions provide rich opportunities to develop social skills, cooperation, and problem-solving in real-life contexts. Whether negotiating a game or sharing equipment, the children are learning how to grow together, preparing them for the many social environments they will encounter as they continue their educational journey.

Warm regards,

Laura & Bruno.

AIKYA | Stage 2

In Aikya, learning is never just about the lessons—it’s also about the relationships that form between our children and the way they grow together as a community. Peer Collaboration & Social Development weave into all aspects of our Montessori work cycle, guiding how we approach projects, discussions, and daily responsibilities. From paired geometry investigations with the Geometry Cabinet to cooperative fraction problem-solving, children have been building patience, turn-taking, and communication skills through shared work. In literacy, our spelling program has encouraged peer coaching, with children discussing strategies, exploring spelling patterns together, and celebrating each other’s progress.

Beyond the classroom, collaboration has taken shape in many forms. Our frisbee PE lessons have been a highlight, with children learning not only how to throw and catch but also how to encourage, guide, and work with teammates to improve. The recent visit from the Peace Run team sparked thoughtful conversations about kindness, unity, and how small actions contribute to a peaceful community. These experiences have offered real-world contexts for the grace and courtesy skills we practise daily in the classroom.

Practical life has also provided opportunities for small-group independence, most memorably in our weekly focaccia baking. Children measure, knead, and flavour their own loaves, then share them with the class. Our study buddy program has continued to connect older and younger students in reading and maths activities, strengthening confidence on both sides. Whether on the sports field, in small group projects, or during quiet independent work, we are seeing more moments where cooperation, empathy, and mutual respect shine—hallmarks of a thriving Montessori community.

Warm regards,

—The Aikya Team – Toby & Chris.

YANI | Stage 3

This term, Yani students have been flexing their teamwork muscles in all sorts of ways. From group projects to paired problem-solving, they’ve been learning that collaboration means balancing their own ideas with those of others, listening actively, and finding creative solutions together.

Students have been proudly giving lessons to their peers on works they’ve created – from learning about the planets in French to mastering Roman numerals – proving that knowledge really does grow when it’s shared. They’ve also shown serious initiative by forming small committees to plan and organise a whole-school disco – we suspect there may have been some strong opinions about song choices.

Our work on identity has also been a collaborative journey. Following our unit inspired by the Stage 3 Indigenous outcome on recognising the ways Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples maintain, share, and communicate culture, we explored the life and music of Gurrumul. His ability to bridge cultures through song sparked deep discussion about the many ways people communicate who they are. In small groups, students then expressed their own identities through imagery – finding common threads while celebrating what makes each of them unique. Whether they’re teaching, organising, or creating together, Yani students have shown that collaboration is not only a skill worth practising, it’s also a lot of fun.

— Thomas, Ella & Bruno.
